Operating Engineers Local 825 invites applicants to its Spring 2022 apprenticeship class. In an innovative partnership with Hudson County Community College, enrolled apprentices will earn credits toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in Technical Studies at the same time as their required hours of classroom and hands-on apprenticeship hours at the Local 825 Training Center.

How To Apply

Applications are full.
Be prepared to have the following documents ready to upload:
  • Birth certificate
  • Valid driver's license and Social Security card
  • Copy of high school diploma and transcript; OR GED and GED Test Scores
  • Post-secondary transcripts as applicable
  • Proof of residency for the past six months (e.g. utility bill, lease, mortgage, tax document)

Eligibility Requirements

  • Apprentices must be no less than 18 years of age.
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalency is required. The applicant must provide an official transcript(s) for high school and post high school education training. All GED records must be submitted if applicable.
  • Applicants must submit a DD-214 to verify military training and/or experience if they are a veteran and wish to receive consideration for such training/experience.
  • Applicants will be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the Apprenticeship Program, with or without a reasonable accommodation, and without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of the individuals or others.

Upon selection by Local 825, applicants will need the following to enroll:

1. Immunization information (MMR, Hep B, meningococcal meningitis)
2. Placement test results or exemption

Applicants will complete a physician-administered drug screening for the use of illegal drugs once accepted into the program and prior to being employed. Applicants who fail to provide proof of clean drug screening will not be processed through the admission procedure until such documentation is received. Cost of the drug screening is to be borne by the sponsor. The JATC’s Drug Policy is a part of its official rules and policies. Applicants shall be given the Drug Policy to review and sign. 
 
All applicants must pass a graphic literacy assessment, “Work Keys Locating Information”, with a score of 3 or higher. There are no other unique requirements for career paths or for employment and advancement opportunities in the operating engineer’s profession.

Program Information

  • Please be aware that this program has a short turnaround time and will begin in January 2022. Before you apply, please make sure you are able to participate in all aspects of the application and program process.
  • Once your application is successfully submitted you will receive an email to sign up for placement testing and a virtual interview. We will do our best to accommodate your preference for a time and date among the options below.
  • Placement Testing: November 27 or 28
  • Virtual Interviews: December 7, 9 or 11
  • Decisions Released: Week of December 13
  • Commitment Due Date: December 17
  • Orientation: January 18- 20
  • HCCC Classes Begin: January 21
  • If accepted, you must commit to the program by December 17. Upon acceptance to the program, you will be asked to complete a self-directed placement survey for HCCC by December 24. You will participate in an orientation on January 18-20, and classes will begin at HCCC on January 21.

The Process

  • Applications will be accepted on November 15, 2021.
  • Applications will be reviewed for eligibility, and the first 250 eligible applicants will be contacted. 
  • Applicants will be invited to take the WorkKeys assessment and schedule an interview with members of the Local 825 training and education team.
  • Upon completion of the WorkKeys assessment and the interview, applicants will be ranked by their combined scores. The top 30 applicants will be invited into the program.
  • At that point, apprentices will complete necessary enrollment procedures with Hudson County Community College.
  • Those applicants not selected to move forward will remain in the Local 825 database for 2 years, to be contacted in the case of future apprenticeship classes and job opportunities.
